Released in 1973, “La Grange” became one of ZZ Top’s most recognizable songs. The song is about a real-life brothel that existed just outside the town of La Grange, TX. The brothel, called The Chicken Ranch,” was also the subject of the film, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Though illegal, the brothel was tolerated by local authorities for decades. The name, Chicken Ranch, originated during the Great Depression when patrons short on cash were allowed to pay for their sexual acts with poultry. The brothel closed down in 1973 when a Houston TV reporter began an investigation of the Chicken Ranch. In 1977, part of the building that was the brothel was moved to Dallas and opened as a restaurant. Today, there are a few remains still standing of the original buildings that were a part of the Chicken Ranch.

The song is ranked No. 74 on Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.”
