On September 18, Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27 years old in the apartment of Monika Dannemann at the Samarkand Hotel. Dannemann had later said that Hendrix took nine sleeping tablets prior. She found Hendrix unresponsive and called an ambulance at 11:18 am and he was taken to St. Mary Abbot’s Hospital where they attempted to resuscitate him unsuccessfully.

According to the ambulance crew member Reg Jones, the scene “…was horrific. He was covered in vomit. There was tons of it all over the pillow – black and brown it was. His airway was completely blocked all the way down. . . We felt his pulse, showed a light in his eyes, but there was no response at all.” The cause of death was officially listed as: “Inhalation of vomit due to barbiturate intoxication.”
