The Apartment Where Keith Moon and Mama Cass Elliot Died
Flat #12 at 9 Curzon Square, Mayfair, London, England.
On September 7, 1978, Keith Moon of The Who died in this London apartment that the drummer had rented from Harry Nilsson. Cass Elliot of the Mamas & the Papas had also died in the same apartment four years earlier on July 29, 1974 and Nilsson believed it was cursed.
Police determined that Moon had taken 32 clomethiazole pills (a sedative). He was taking the pills to alleviate his alcohol withdrawal symptoms. The doctor who prescribed the pills was unaware of Moon’s lifestyle and instructed him to take no more than three pills a day when he felt a craving for alcohol. Clomethiazole is discouraged for unsupervised detoxification due to it’s addictive potential and risk of death when mixed with alcohol.
Cass Elliot’s death occurred on July 29, 1974 at the same apartment, four years earlier. Elliot died of a heart attack in her sleep. An often reported but false urban legend is that Elliot died choking on a ham sandwich, however there was no food found in her windpipe.
Both Moon and Elliot were 32 years old when they died.
