On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Oh. Dimebag, whose real name was Darrell Abbott, was playing with his band Damageplan alongside his brother Vinnie Paul. As the founding member of Pantera, the siblings formed the side project, Damageplan, while on an extended hiatus from Pantera. The gunman, shot Abbott 3 times in the head, the third shot killing him instantly. Three others were fatally wounded including Jeff “Mayhem” Thompson, the band’s head of security who was killed while talking the gumman as was Arosa employee Erin Halk. Audience member Nathan Bray was killed while trying to perform CPR on Abbott. Damageplan drum technician, John “Kat” Brooks was shot three times as he attempted to get the gun away from the shooter but was overpowered and taken hostage in a headlock. Seven police officers came in the front entrance and moved toward the stage where the gunman was while officer James Niggemeyer came through the backdoor behind the stage. Niggemeyer was able to fire a single shot killing the shooter instantly. Several theories of motive have been suggested but ruled out. Ultimately, it was learned that the gunman was severely schizophrenic and had stopped taking his medication.
